Congratulations to Leanne Chinery (playing for Canada). Her Pairs team finished in 5th place in Section 1. They just missed out on qualifying for the Finals. Then Leanne qualified for the Finals in the Singles, ending up in 5th= position. Great efforts on very slow and poor quality greens.

Winter Cup 2009

Congratulations to Dennis Mathews, Keith Burgess, Colin Bouzaid and Bruce Cochrane (aptly named the "Birkenhead Bruisers"), who were second behind Browns Bay. They recovered from a very slow start on the first day to overtake leader Mahurangi East but were pipped by Browns Bay. Our other team, the "Birkenhead Bouncers", finished sixth out of fourteen teams.

Well done to both Teams.

Allan Meeking Tournament

The Allan Meeking tournament was eventually played on the 27 June 2009 after many false starts because every time it was previously scheduled, the weather gods had other ideas. In fact, it nearly happened again because the tournament was played in fog that thick, it was hard to distinguish the bowls on the head from the mat.

Nevertheless there was a good turnout of 9 teams, who played competitively but with good spirits. Eventually Bub Pike's team of Terry Moverley, Bruce Cochrane and Gerry Eller won through.

Birkenhead Juniors Win Sorrell Cup

Martin Short (skip), Mark Rumble, Kevin George and Bruce Cochrane were in dominant form in winning the prestigious Sorrell Cup junior tournament at Browns Bay on 14 June 2009. The team played very well together with Bruce leading well; Kevin added shots from two; Mark was consistent at three and played some good saving shots; and Martin at skip added or saved as required.

The win again confirmed that Birkenhead's junior bowlers are the most competitive in North Harbour following earlier successes by other Club teams in tournaments held at Takapuna, Northcote and Birkenhead.
