Well done to our women members who organised this very successful tournament - a first for our Club. We've included some photos to commemorate the occasion and some letters of appreciation recognising the success of the tournament. Hopefully the tournament has raised the profile of the Club for a repeat next year and to assist in bringing in new women members.

Newport Harbour Bowling Club
Special correspondent and Newport Harbour Liaison Officer Roy Parker has filed the following report about the visit by members of our sister club:
After weeks of e-mails, 23 Newport Harbor Bowling Club members and three support crew arrived at our club - surprisingly they were not jet lagged after landing in New Zealand the night before.
The party, which was led by John McDonald and Ray Norris, turned up in time for the barbecue lunch (with hospitality) prepared for them.
Then ten teams of triples and two teams of fours each played two games of eight ends which was enjoyed by everybody. Nobody cared who won or lost, although one or two of our visitors found the green (running at about 18 seconds) a bit fast. Jerry Grady using the dynamic green bowls spent most of the time getting his bowls out of the ditch. A couple of wrong bias were also spotted.
After the games we socialised in the bar with a glass or two of fine NZ wine and some good NZ beer.
Ray Norris said a few words on behalf of our visitors and presented the club with a carved wooden yacht - yachting is a popular pastime in Newport. This will be on display in the club.
Birkenhead executive member John Russell said a few words on behalf of our club and members.
Our guests were a great bunch of people and everybody thoroughly enjoyed the occasion.
We really hope that Newport have a great two weeks in NZ prior to their return to Southern California - a beautiful part of the world.

Trans Tasman U/18 and U/25 Series
The Trans Tasman series, held at our Club from 26 to 28 February 2010, was a huge success. The New Zealand teams were successful overall for the first time since the inception of competition, as follows:
Under 25 Trophy - New Zealand beat Australia
Under 25 Men - Australia beat New Zealand 16 - 10
Under 25 Women - New Zealand beat Australia 16 - 8
Under 18 Trophy - New Zealand beat Australia
Under 18 Women - New Zealand beat Australia 10 - 8
Under 18 Men - New Zealand beat Australia 10 - 8
Spectators were treated to some exceptional performances by the players and some very close games.
Thanks to every club member who contributed to the successful running of the tournament, especially John Porter and Kevin Croasdale. Also to greenkeeper Dennis Matthews, who presented the greens in exceptional condition.

Women's Junior Championship Singles
Players L to R are Lisa Helmling, Win Cochrane, Lisa Cooley and Sharon Sowry
History being created in our first woman's junior club tournament. The field of four were Win Cochrane, Sharon Sowry, Lisa Cooley and Lisa Helmling. The winner being Lisa Helmling. The games were all played in the best spirit with little time delay, and the measuring tape being used infrequently. The games proved that Birkenhead is developing a strong base of junior women's talent for the future. Bruce Cochrane (who is unbiassed) says "If fitness were to be a consideration in the game of Bowls, the men could learn something from the women."

Hyundai National Open Championships - 2009/2010
Birkenhead players achieved some outstanding results at the National held in Wellington in spite of difficult conditions.
Leanne Chinery followed up on her fine form this season by reaching the semi-finals of the women's singles before bowing out to eventual winner Jan Khan. Her team also reached the last 16 in the women's pairs.
Don Trott reached the quarter-finals of the men's singles, adding to his successes this season.

Asia Pacific Championships
Congratulations to Leanne Chinney. Her Pairs team finished in 5th place in Section 1. They just missed out on qualifying for the Finals. Then Leanne qualified for the Finals in the Singles, ending up in 5th= position. Great efforts on very slow and poor quality greens.

Asia Pacific Championships in Kuala Lumpar
Our Club member, Leanne Chiney (playing for Canada in the Pairs), is having mixed success. Three wins against Singapore, Japan and India but losses to Norfolk and the Phillipines, have left the pairs team in 4th position in section 1. However, there are 9 rounds so Leanne is in with a real chance.
Apparently the greens are running at around 8 seconds with a few bumps adding interest to the the path of bowls to the jack. Not easy.
